Confessions of a Shopaholic posterThe poster uses a stereotypical portrayal of a woman shopping designed to appeal and be relatable to women of all ages. The rhetorical questions reinforce this stereotype.
It also uses stereotypical ideas of what women are interested in (shopping & fashion). It may appeal to viewers' aspirations by using the backdrop of New York City and their consumeristic tendencies by showing a taxi overflowing with shopping bags. |
Fiverr's "doer" tube adFiverr is a site for freelancers (primarily digital content producers) to advertise and sell their services.
In early 2017 they put out an ad on the London Underground advertising their site. The use of the model is slightly unconventional. Despite being conventionally airbrushed & made-up, the model has messy hair to imply that she is outside the box. The use of high-contrast, monochrome photography makes the ad striking but to some viewers this may look sinister. The text is quite unconventional in making the job & lifestyle the ad is selling sound remarkably unappealing. For this reason the ad became very controversial for implying that sleep deprivation was a normal part of the lifestyle of freelancers and that you need to live unhealthily to be successful. The ad reflected badly not only on Fiverr but on the culture it represents, as Twitter user @hieronymus_burp described it: "This whole parasitic App economy has got around to making toil, alienation and wrecking your health aspirational." |
